Garden toys fail on material choice and UV exposure, not on price. Here is what to specify so a set still looks saleable at the end of the season.
Outdoor toy returns are usually a material problem rather than a design problem. A set that fades, cracks or warps after one summer generates returns and makes retailers cautious about the whole category, so the specification matters more than the unit price.
Specify the material for outdoor use
Weather-resistant moulded plastic is the standard choice for garden bowling pins, ring toss posts and flying discs. Ask the supplier to confirm the material is intended for outdoor use and can be wiped clean with a damp cloth, because that is what determines whether the set can stay outside between sessions.
Think about UV exposure
Colour fading is the most visible failure on a garden toy. Ask how the colour is specified and whether the supplier has experience with products that stay outdoors through a full season. If you plan to display the set outdoors in a garden centre, say so at the sampling stage.
Check the parts that take the load
- Ring toss posts: do they push into grass or sand without tools, and are the tops rounded?
- Bowling pins: are they lighter and shorter than adult pins, and does the ball have finger holes sized for children?
- Flying discs: is the rim rounded so the disc can be caught by hand?
- Net sets: do the poles and pegs assemble without tools?
Plan the storage and cleaning story
Retailers need a simple answer for customers asking how to look after the set. If the material can be wiped clean and left outdoors between sessions, that is a selling point worth putting on the packaging. Confirm the cleaning method with the supplier before you write it into the artwork.
