For the 0+ age band, the details that matter are embroidered features, secure seams and no detachable parts. Here is what to check on a plush sample.
Plush toys for infants are judged on a different set of details than plush toys for older children. Once a child can grip and pull, anything that can be detached becomes a risk, so the sample review should focus on how the toy is assembled rather than how it looks.
Start with the face
Embroidered eyes and nose are the safer choice for the 0+ age band because there is no plastic part to work loose. On a sample, check that the embroidery is dense enough that no backing shows through, and that the thread ends are finished inside the head rather than left loose.
Check the seams and the filling
Double-stitched seams matter most at the points a child grips: the neck, the arms and the base. Ask what filling is used. Hypoallergenic polyester fibre is the common specification for infant comfort toys, and it should be evenly distributed so the toy keeps its shape after washing.
Look for anything that can be pulled off
- Ribbons, bows and tags that are only tacked on rather than sewn through
- Buttons, beads or plastic eyes
- Loose threads long enough to wrap around a finger
- Zips on toys intended for the youngest age band
Confirm the surface fabric
Short-pile plush is easier to keep clean than long-pile fabric because it does not trap as much dust, and it wipes clean with a damp cloth. If the toy is intended for prams and cots, ask whether the fabric has been specified for repeated washing.
